Blog Of The Year - Story

Real life is stranger than fiction.  I'm constantly amazed by interactions I have.

There's a trophy store near me that's been around forever.  At least 30 years.  It's owned by a guy named Dick who's now in his sixties.

For my Bloggy Award which I'm giving next week, I want a bigass trophy.  A real trophy.  Metal, not plastic.  Something the recipient can proudly display on her mantel.

So I went in to Dick's store yesterday and asked for one.  He was more than happy to take my order.  He asked how I want it engraved and I said, "2012 Blog Of The Year."  Dick was puzzled and asked me, "What's a blog?"  Seriously.  In 2012, he'd never heard of a blog.

I start to explain, in generic terms, and he stops me.  "You mean, people write about their lives on the Internet?"  Yes, I say.  "Sounds awfully strange to me," Dick replies.

I hadn't even gotten to the part where the award is for a women's fashion blog and that I'm a women's fashion-blogger.  I was afraid that news would blow the toupee off his head.

On another front, my boss (me) told my employee (me) to go to work today.  "There's too much that needs to be done!"  My employee whined and said he doesn't want to: "It's a holiday...".  "No yet, you slacker, get in there."  I'm torn.  Who will win this debate?

Are you working today?

  1. Stay home! :) I'm home today, about to head out for brunch with friends and finish up my Christmas shopping for L. It's a bit blustery, but it will be fun.

I'm always surprised when someone doesn't know what a blog is! Both my husband and I have blogged for close to 5 years each.

  3. Haha, that "what's a blog?" story reminds me of my grandmother. She's not very computer-savvy; email confuses her. My dad told me she started a blog. I was completely floored. Then he told me that she just thinks it's a blog...it's really a Word doc that she saves to her desktop.

I say blow off work. Then again, that mentality is probably why I'm five months late in getting my sister's wedding video edited...

This totally cracked me up. :)

  4. LOL, what's a blog?? I am sure that I know some folks who still don't really know what a blog is. Heck, my own mother only got an email address last year for the first time!

I'm working today. But seeing as I'm currently reading your blog, you can see how well that's going. ;)

  5. On behalf of the general public, thank you for not displacing Dick's toupee.

As for work, well I am in the office... not getting much done just now. Face time is important, but it's ok with me if you play hooky.

  6. Sadly, yes, I'm at work. And I guess it is a bit surprising that there are people who don't know what blogs are. I know there are people who have never read one, but at least they've heard of them!

  8. At least you have a cool car to get yourself to work. Neither me or my man are working today. But on the bad scale, no pay either.
Can't wait to see the trophy!!!!!

  9. Aww poor Dick. It's hard explaining to my non-internet downhomestyle friends what I do. It's nice because they weren't on their phones all night, and the DH and I had a grand time just talking and enjoying their company, but it made some of our conversation stilted when they didn't know about X or Y internet phenomenon.

It gets even harder when I try to explain to people what I sell!

And yes I suppose I'm technically working today. I went and shipping off an obi and buttonflower order to New Zealand! Very exciting.

Still have to give you props for jumpstarting my business.

  10. haha Yeah, you wouldn't want to blow Dick's toupee off. lol
My inner employee is alllllllways whining. My inner boss has to yell at it to get it's sh#t together and quit being such a wimp. ha I really need to win that lottery.

  12. It's interesting isn't it, for those of us who have been online for (in most cases) many years (if not whole decades now) to run into people who are still very much "real world only" kind of folks. My mom (who's in her 50s) uses the web, but isn't really into the notion of blogging or social media, and my grandma (who's 82 years young), who has been using the computer in a desktop capacity since the 1980s, really won't venture online at all. It sounds like my grandma and Dick would have a fair bit in common in that capacity.

    1. Yes, it is interesting. I went online in 1996 and jumped into e-mail immediately (which explains my ancient e-mail address on Pipeline, a company sold several times). Right away, I created lists of friends to communicate in a way resembling social media now. I was an early-adopter and can't believe 16 years has gone by. Most people older than me never got on The Computer Train.

  13. If there are things to be done then go to work ~ I am working right through with only 25 & 26 off ... probably even going in today although I do not officially work on Saturdays but there is a horrible chore that needs to be done (suspending an employee) and I dont want the manager to have to do it on her own.

  14. oh gosh, that sounds like something my mister would say. he does NOT get blogging AT ALL. :-) Even in 2012, his poor old soul just wouldn't handle it.
